日本語132                                   Verbs

We use the conjunction ので much like we will learn to use から in L. 9, in order to give a Reason. Because it's _____

Therefore, coming before the ので could be:

An い-Adjective 大きいので、Because it's big...

--a な-Adjective (in which case we keep the な in before the ので, きれいなので) Because it's pretty/clean

--Plain form of a Verb たべるので、のむので Because I eat/drink

But in order to place the Negative Form of a verb in front of ので, we have to learn how to make the Plain Negative form of verbs. Here is how:

Of course, there are our two main types of Verbs plus irregular verbs (する、くる)

1. る Verbs = smaller group, homogeneous, regular: off comes the -ます, add-る or the -ない

でかけ-ます たべ-ます み-ます おき-ます ね-ます
でかけ-る たべ-る み-る おき-る ね-る
でかけ-ない たべ-ない み-ない おき-ない ね-ない

In other words, the BASE (the unchanging part) and the STEM (the pre-ます form) are the same.

  2. Not so with the other, or the SECOND type of Verbs, the う Verbs

う Verbs = much more heterogeneous, several sub-categories; but the aim is always to end up with a consonant + an "a-nai" (あない) sound following a consonant.

We can group them according to the different consonants:

1. The Verbs with an M or B, i.e. changing along the ま、み、む、め、も line. For trhe negative, we wind up on the ま line:

のみます のむ のまない

よみます

よびます

よむ

よまない

よばない

B あそびます             あそぶ                 あそばない

2、K/G

3、The S-line: はなします             はなす                 はなさない

4、The R-line

おわります(end) おわる おわらない
はじまります(begin) はじまる はじまらない

5、T Verbs like まつ/もつ ーーーー> またない、もたない

6、The Vowel い /df U---> a latent W emerges: わない

あいます あう あわない**
かいます(buy) かう かわない **
うたいます うたう うたわない**

**Note: A latent "w" re-appears in the plain negative of these verbs in order to provide a necessary consonant

7. N like しぬ (die)ーーーー> しなない (won't die)

8. Irregular Verbs:

きます   くる こない
します する しない
あります ある ない(only this ない form is irregular)
